Synthetic Oil : A Brief Overview on its Usage and Benefits

A constant shift from conventional oil to synthetic oil has become a common sight in automotive as well as industrial lubricant industry because of its increasing demand from fuel-efficient vehicles and high-performance machinery. Globally, the synthetic fuel market is about to surge more so because it is claimed to reduce the worldwide energy crisis, decrease carbon emission, and utilized by petrol and diesel engines as fuel without any modification.

Synthetic lubricants are considered to be highest performing engine oils worldwide as well as gaining popularity in India. This blog is a short rundown on why that is the case, further explanations on above mentioned points  and insights on when you should prefer these fluids.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic lubricants are artificial composition of chemically amended compounds like petroleum components with distilled crude oil being the base material. This fluid is derived from ethylene and propylene dispersed by gas in crude oil, and then with help of polymerization and catalysis , it is purified into base oil composed of macromolecules.

The petroleum molecules are disintegrated first and then reconstructed properly which makes the molecular structure of synthetic lubricants more uniform. Synthetic lubricants are usually utilized in high-performance vehicles as well as mainstream engines.

How is Synthetic Oil different from Conventional Oil?

A conventional oil is made up of crude oil extracted directly from the ground whereas the synthetic oil is man-made and artificially manufactured in a lab. Traditional oil has low viscosity index as compared to synthetic oil and less reliable in high temperature because of its irregular molecular structure. It has varied sizes of molecules and more impurities with the presence of primary ingredients.

On the other hand, Synthetic oils, since it is formed through artificial manufacturing, the structure can be moulded and is uniform that allows it to flow easier in cold temperatures and thick at higher one. It resists the heat and stress produced by the engines.

Benefits of using Synthetic Oil

  • As mentioned earlier, the presence of homogenous structure of synthetic oil makes them chemically stable.
  • It has high-viscosity index. So it provides a stable lubricating film in a wider temperature range.
  • At low temperatures, synthetic oils can flow easily and not become too thick like conventional oils. This prevents lubricant starvation conditions and engine failure.
  • Synthetic oils are less volatile which leads to less loss of oil to the engine’s exhaust stream. This reduces the atmospheric pollution as well as the requirement of makeup oil between oil changes.
  • Lack of impurities in synthetic lubricant keeps the engine clean for long term.
  • It has longer lifetime than a conventional oil.
  • It provides protection against ash and other kind of deposits formed on engine hot spots, especially in turbochargers or superchargers.
  • It improves fuel efficiency and gives better mileage.

However, with these many advantages on board, opting for synthetic lubricant could be expensive. Conventional oil is cheaper and gives adequate lubrication to your vehicle’s engine but synthetic oil would be a long term investment and worth it because it will ensure better engine protection, less maintenance requirement and also an eco-friendly substitute. Our ever-growing automotive engine brand, Supergen, has a range of such premium synthetic oils exclusively manufactured for better mileage for heavy performance vehicles.
